Caught!
Tunji felt his heart flutter, skip, jump and somersaulted - all at the same time. The call had come in an hour ago; "Tunji I'm coming over to see you. "Her voice had sounded like that of an angel just awake from slumber.
He became a nervous wreck, trying to rearrange his room, searching for misplaced dirt, worrying. He had never had a girl come over before. Never!
Not with having old soldier for a father. But with old soldier out of town and not expected back till the next month, this was a good time to have Kemi over.
They had talked about it, playfully - shyly on his part. He had never expected the day to come, but here he was, in his room, trying to figure out what to do about that air conditioning that just wouldn't work right.
He sighed and looked at his watch. She was due to arrive at a moment's notice. He was home alone. With old soldier out of town, his siblings did as they liked and his mother was out doing whatever it was she does on a Saturday afternoon.
He heard his phone ringing, a nice Infinix smartphone brand, one of the few "luxuries" he was allowed as a sixteen year old Nigerian teen. He saw it was Kemi calling, he got nervous all over again before thumbing the answer button.
"I'm on your street." He heard her teeny voice on the phone.
He swallowed and wet his tongue before answering, "okay, I'll be outside the gate."
"Okay," came the reply.
He quickly combed his hair, spray the room with an air freshener, pat the bed for the umpteenth time and stagger out of his room like a drunkard.
Outside, he saw her lithe, slim form coming. He nearly swallowed his Adam apple this time around. He felt himself starting to sweat. She was, in his eyes, the most beautiful girl in school. And she had picked him. Him! Of all the guys in school, she had picked him. He felt butterflies in his stomach.
Finally, she was a few feet away. She smiled that her radiant smile that was like a thousand lightbulbs had been lit. He felt woozy and lightheaded just looking at her.
She came to him and kissed him on the cheek. He felt like his spirit was going to leave his body. She smelled good. He managed to choke out that compliment. She smiled and kissed him again, tenderly. It was too much, too soon. He wasn't sure he could bare it. He wasn't even sure he could move his legs.
Eventually, he managed to calm down enough to take her inside, then upstairs, to his room. She sat on the bed, with ease, feeling at home already. He marveled at that. He wasn't feeling at home anymore, right in his own room! It felt strange somehow. The air had shifted somehow. He could sense it. A foreign agent had been introduced.
"What - what can I get you?" he asked, shaking slightly.
"Oh, I'm good." she smiled, "don't bother. Why are you standing? Come sit with me".
"Sure - sure" he stuttered helplessly and gingerly went to sit next to her.
They were both silent for a beat, then she spoke up, "you've a very nice room." Nice? This place? He thought but didn't voice it. She was just being nice. He stayed silent, unsure of himself to speak.
"So, why don't you kiss me?" she asked matter-of-factly. "So-so-sorry?" he croaked. He felt himself break into cold sweat.
"You heard me. Kiss me." "Where?" "On my lips." "I - um - I"
"Are you shy? Afraid? Nervous?"
"Me, no." he managed, drawing up courage. "So, do it, kiss me. Prove to me that you love me".
"Ye -ye - yes". He drew close to her and felt himself moving toward the mark.
His first kiss was awkward, but he eventually got the hang of it.
They must have been at it for a while, and lost too, because the next thing he knew, his door was opening and guess who was standing there? Old soldier!
Tunji yelped in surprise and nearly jumped out of his skin. Kemi just stared blankly.
Old soldier didn't say anything, he just went back out and shut the door behind him.
Tunji knew he was as good as dead!
